QR Power Portfolio Optimizer computes (sub)-hourly dispatch to all bilateral suppliers and ISO buy and sell orders, that minimize total power procurement cost and rate, by taking full advantage of arbitrage and market opportunities arising from price movements in volatile electricity spot markets, and the flexibilities built in the bilateral procurement contracts.

    This is a dual use solution. Short term procurement portfolio optimization is performed in real-time, with high accuracy, at every trading period in (sub)-hourly intraday or day-ahead markets. It can also be performed over longer horizons, with less precisions, for planning purposes.

    Trimming down-side losses. When forecasted spot prices are lower than the cost of some bilateral procurement contracts, optimization reduces scheduling from these bilateral contracts, subject to contractual constraints, and increases buying from the spot markets to satisfy total load requirement.

    Capturing upside gains. When forecasted spot prices are higher than the cost of some bilateral procurements, optimization increases buying from these bilaterals to the maximum allowed under contractual terms, to satisfy load requirements first, then selling the excess imbalance to the spot market.

Traders can start with the optimal dispatch suggested by the system, modify, validate, approve and submit these electronically with a click of the mouse to each supplier and ISOs, and send and receive electronic confirmation and affirmation.

This computes (sub)-hourly position and nodal P&L of each bilateral procurement contract and the ISO buy-sell imbalances, in real-time at every period, going 7 days forward. Results are gathered in a live web Trading and Performance Analysis Panel. P&L valuation is performed with an eye to performance analysis, comparing the optimal dispatch as suggested by the optimization and the actual or projected dispatch by traders, as every hour rolls. In one glance, traders and management can compare the different dispatch scenarios.     Typical constraints and flexibilities that are found in electricity procurement contracts are precisely the reasons why their dispatch can be optimized. The dispatch decision at any period impacts the remaining dispatch options for the subsequent periods. As a result, this is a path-dependent optimization problem.

    Constraints in procurement contracts can be (sub)-hourly, daily or monthly fixed or variable must take-or-pay quantity, while allowing (sub)-hourly variability in load by certain quantities. Level dependent ramp up and down rates, and nonlinear heat-rate.

    Complex modeling of procurement contract pricing and cash flow. Forced discreet dispatch levels. Meeting total demand load forecast is the global constraint of optimization at every period.
